Bless the Lord, o my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not all his benefits
In times of plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow our souls need to be stirred up to praise the Lord.
Bless the Lord, O my soul
This is exactly what King David found to be true of his own soul. Psalm 103 begins and ends with David exhorting his inner self to praise the Lord: “Bless the Lord o my soul” he writes. In between, he gives reasons why his soul should offer this praise. It is often said today that what we need is heart religion, and with this David surely agrees. He wants praise to come from his soul, from his innermost being. It is not enough for him to praise the Lord merely with his feet by coming to Church or merely with his mouth by speaking and singing. He knows that God rejects worship that is only outward and from hearts that are far from him (see Isaiah 29:13)
David would have agreed that what we need today is heart religion, and I pray that we would also be in agreement.
